For the vast majority of the world, January 20th, 2009 will forever go down in history as the day that the first African-American became President of the United States of America.  As a lifelong Democrat and champion of equality for all, I too will remember it as long as I live for that reason as well.  However, I must confess that something else took place on that same day that holds just as much (if not a tiny bit more) personal significance for me.

I realize that I'm more than likely preaching to the converted here but for the sake of discussion, I'm going to assume that I'm not.

More often than not, independent businesses (for lack of a better term) operate in the red financially for the better part of their existences.  Some are fortunate enough to break even and a few even manage to make a profit when all is said and done.  However, when we're talking about straight edge and hardcore music businesses, it's a pretty safe bet that ALMOST ALL are owned and run by people with one or more day jobs.

Straight Edge.
I remember first seeing these words while reading a band interview in a magazine, wondering what they were all about. The band mentioned being edge, being vegetarianism, taking part in activism. As a huge fan of this band, I figured I’d do a little research, and find out more about this straight edge. A few months later, I made the decision to claim edge. But sometimes I can’t help but think that if it weren’t for a magazine, I might not have become interested in sXe. Now I can’t be sure of this; its quite possible I would have found out about it in another way. But at the time I was just like wow, this article totally changed my life.

If you're awake, in today's day and age, I'm sure you've come face to face with the ugly rear-end of sexism. Women and men have both been on the butt-end of many many mental midgets attacks. Unfortunately, this has become most prevalent in the scene of my favorite, and chosen style of music...hip-hop.

As a 20 year registered rank and file Democrat, I try my best to not pay much attention (if any at all) to the things that the vast majority of Republicans say and do.  However, shortly after Alaska Governor Sarah Palin got the Republican Vice Presidential nomination and the Republicans immediately deemed any criticism whatsoever of Palin as evidence of the deep-rooted and institutionalized sexism that is still very much alive today
