The Importance of Buying Independent |

I realize that I'm more than likely preaching to the converted here but for the sake of discussion, I'm going to assume that I'm not.
More often than not, independent businesses (for lack of a better term) operate in the red financially for the better part of their existences. Some are fortunate enough to break even and a few even manage to make a profit when all is said and done. However, when we're talking about straight edge and hardcore music businesses, it's a pretty safe bet that ALMOST ALL are owned and run by people with one or more day jobs.
I'll assume that the vast majority of you are either middle class like me or upper middle class, both of which mean about the same thing in the current economic climate. Because of this, you might be under the impression that there's not a whole lot that you can do to help independent businesses survive and possibly thrive given your limited financial resources. Well, my friends, I'm here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth.
"Every little bit helps" and "every penny counts" may sound like tired old cliches at this point but when it comes to independent businesses, those words are gospel. Every single penny that you spend at an independent business keeps those businesses' doors open and allows them to continue putting out products that you love.
However, it's EXTREMELY important that you make it a point to buy DIRECTLY from those businesses as opposed to via a third party. In real world terms, instead of buying your music from iTunes or Amazon.com, buy it directly from the band/artist or from their record labels. Many bands and artists (Jeff Caudill
is a perfect example) as well as record labels (i.e. Dischord ) even offer cool little incentives to those who buy directly from them in the form of buttons, postcards, small posters and even free mp3s unavailable anywhere else.In closing, I'd like to urge all of you to get in the habit of thinking about exactly where it is that you're spending your hard-earned money from now on and whenever possible, please try to give that money to the actual creators of the products as opposed to the third parties who sell it, ESPECIALLY if you'd like for those creators to continue creating for you.
Respectfully Yours,
Jake
