Straightedge is commonly known as a global youth movement of individuals who shun the use of intoxicants of any kind, as well as refraining from promiscuous sexual activity. But what are the reasons behind such lifestyle choices - are these tenets connected, and what are the benefits of following them?

| I hate being asked why I am Straight Edge; I feel like it should be a decision that needs no external reasoning. People don’t often ask questions like “why do you breath air?” or “why do you eat food?” So why is it that they feel it’s necessary to ask me why I make the choice to care for myself? I feel like people who question others about their choice to claim are just waiting their turn to rebut the plethora of rehearsed responses; and I hate listening to dissertations on how Straight Edge is all about sobriety and community.

| Ah, college. The time in many young adults life to move away from mom and dad and experience the ‘real world’ Three years ago, I was presented with the greatest opportunity of my life – I was accepted to my first choice college. I was ecstatic; I was going to be my parent’s only child with a college education. I had never known anything outside of my hoebunk little town, and after busting my ass at Dairy Queen for the past four years, I was ready for the change. Things were awesome – until I actually got to school.

He wrote a book about the straight edge subculture and thats what the interview is about, straight edge and fashion, women in hardcore, hardcore and religion and so on. | My name is Jake and I’m one of the many aging former straight edge hardcore dudes on the internets. I got into hardcore in the mid ’80s and was quite active in the Southern California hardcore scene of the early ’90s. Aside from being a roadie of sorts for my brother’s punk band ICE from ’91 to ’94, fronting a TERRIBLE punk/hardcore outfit called Cereal for half of ’93 and releasing one 7" EP by some kids in a local alternative band called Bobwolf on my Black Coffee
