The Straight-Edge Conundrum: My Take on sXe Culture

Introduction: Straight-Edge, More Than Just a Label?

Most straight-edge people I’ve met? Honestly, they come off as jerks.” This blunt admission sets the stage for my unfiltered take on the straight-edge culture and its impact on personal choices and relationships.

Straight-Edge and Judgment: A Friend’s Crossroads

Take Nicole, an online friend who’s straight-edge. She faced a real dilemma over trying alcohol for the first time. Her worry wasn’t about the drink itself, but the fear of being shunned by her sXe friends. This moment speaks volumes about the pressures and expectations in the straight-edge community.

Redefining Straight-Edge: A Personal Journey

What’s straight-edge these days, anyway? Back in Ian MacKaye’s era, it seemed like a personal choice, a mark of self-respect. Now? It feels more like a cult, with rigid rules and harsh judgments. It’s like some folks are playing gatekeepers, deciding who’s in or out based on arbitrary standards.

Girlfriend’s Perspective: Intolerance in the sXe Scene

My girlfriend’s straight-edge too. She once told me off about a kid on a forum who asked about going to a wine tasting. Her reaction? She gave the kid a verbal lashing. And me, a casual drinker? In her straight-edge eyes, that’s enough to label me ‘trashy.

Straight-Edge: Belief System or Dogma?

I went digging to find out what being straight-edge really means nowadays. Seems like it’s turned into a quasi-religion. You’ve got different sects: the hardliners, the old schoolers, the outright intolerant. It’s a belief system, sure, but when did it become about imposing those beliefs on others?

Respect for Individual Beliefs

Straight-edge should be a personal thing, shouldn’t it? Like religion, it’s open to interpretation. Whether it’s about drinking a beer or the music you listen to, shouldn’t that be your call?

Let’s Hear Your Thoughts

So, what’s your angle on straight-edge? Keen to hear different views.

i don’t agree that trying alcohol or smoking everyonce in a while.
you don’t have the right to call your self edge.
if you do those things i’d more concider you clean.
you can’t be both.

Written by Guest on 2005-03-08 12:46:54*dies* I think I found the right place if there are others here who think like I do. You should be concerned with yourself. I think Straightedge is there to help those of us who dont want to go get trashed every weekend to be able to find like kindred. The levels of how much you do or dont do is up to you. I drink caffine, and have drank alcohol. But never in excess. A glass of wine at new years, come on. I think the whole idea of straightedge is to get you to think on your own! Sad that some still cant do that.
straight edge is the only way to be
Written by Guest on 2005-01-28 22:19:12It may not be right to push straight edge on anyone, but it’s fine to look down on those who aren’t. People who do bad things, or things that harm others or themselves, or things that are not viewed as good clean activities should be looked down on…by people and God. Bad things are for bad people. You can drink and be straight edged. If you’re 21 or over, have a few drinks in a clean bar, or privacy of your own home…you’re straight edge as there’s no bad in that. It’s those who do it all the time, and who go downtown, and who do it underage, or those who go to strip clubs, or porn shops, or stuff like that. That’s always wrong, and contrary to popular belief, it’s not okay to bad things every once in a while. It’s never okay. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
