Strawberry Fields gives us all a great gift in this testimony of her recovery. We should listen and learn.
I loved TBS also! Kids these days will never know the struggle of limewire like we did!
You referred to Jane and I mentioned an old professor Rich. They planted our seeds!

When I was younger, my brothers friends made it sound like being straightedge was like being in a cult, so I slapped the “above the influence” label on it instead and made it more palatable for my peers. When I was 18, I got the ATI symbol (circle with the arrow pointing up in it) over my heart. All my friends made the comment that when I stopped being above the influence, I’d be able to put the dates that I was sober in the circle (ex: 1995-20??). They only approved of my tattoo idea since it could easily be altered when I decided to “change my mind”.
I think being able to change your mind with new information is a beautiful thing, means you are always willing to learn. But man, sometimes you just need someone to believe in you the way you believe in yourself.
Support people making life choices. Support them if they fail. Support them in they succeed. Just support people.

Thank you, Dawn, for this article. I’m in a similar situation right now – I’m 33 – been SXE for 15 years, always battling depression without any substances. Until I couldn’t do it anymore. It’s an illness and should be treated as such. I’ve tried it without medication but it didn’t work. I would rather not take any pills but I can’t let depression define my whole life right now. I think it’s valid to get help if you need it – although it does feel weird taking pills that have an effect on the body and the mind that edgers mostly try to avoid. Still, it’s better than all the negative effects of a full grown depression. It’s not like we’re trying to get high – it’s just medicine that we need to live a normal life.
So thank you for being brave and sharing your story. It actually helps a lot to know that I’m not alone. Of course I know many people who take antidepressants but it’s really interesting to hear this from someone who’s straight edge.
Good luck for the future, hope you’ll be ok! 🙂
Thanks for this post. Truly. I am currently 21 and I’ve been drug free my entire life, and Straight Edge since i was about 15 or so. I’ve had a similar problem, since I lost two really close friends due to drug abuse which led to the suicide of one of them, and after the death of his partner after a period of profound depression. I was myself diagnosed with depression after that and I started my therapy with anti-depressants. I wasn’t sure about the whole thing and it caused me a lot of doubts regarding edge and ideology. I finished with them about two weeks ago and I can say I am slightly happier. With that said, we shouldn’t put Edge over our own physical and mental health, and we should be able to difference between social drugs and drugs used for therapy and/or health in general. Still, anti-depressants are really dangerous and you should be really sure about it, and be aware of your situation during the whole process. It was nice hearing from other people with similar troubles.
I’m not sure why the perspective would change in regards to marijuana in particular simply because it has been legalized in many states for recreational use. Alcohol has been legal since prohibition, and that is a main vice for abstinence in the straight edge community. That said, how does everyone feel about THC-free CBD oil and similar therapeutic product use? I have not personally used these products, however know people that use them to treat the symptoms of a variety of ailments from chronic pain to cancer to anxiety. If the effect isn’t a high sensation, does it count as breaking edge? Curious to hear anyone else’s thoughts on that conundrum. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing 🙂 I completely understand and like Laura, I don’t have many friends either. I lost most of them 10 years ago when I know longer was the “party girl.” But, who wants friends like that? I have 3 cats as well and take care of the stray cats on my street. I guess you can say I like cats lol. As for dating, I have tried dating men who are not edge and they just never seem to fully grasp the importance of my life choice. Many times, it is taken lightly, like it is not a life choice for me. You ever need a friend to talk to, I am here 🙂

“Without drinking, without the anesthetics designed to keep the working class complacent, there is no other option but activism. There is no way to be content in the current system, there is only the desire to change it.”
This passage served as a great epiphany for me. I’ve always found myself charged and have dedicated my career to breaking the norms that perpetuate inequity and injustice. After reading your article I have realized that my charge for social justice is heightened and complimented by my choice to live free of the recreational use of drugs.
Thank you for your contribution to this body of literature!

Thank you so much for this article. Too often, the other mamas around me are so aghast that I don’t drink. Then comes the defensive statements because, somehow, someway, I must be judging their decision to indulge in a glass of wine (or two).
I’ve always seen drug use as a distraction from the work that needs to be done to improve upon the world. Your article addresses this perfectly. Thanks!
Great read. Well written. Actually wished it was a bit longer. James ✖️✖️✖️
Love this – thank you for sharing. I can totally relate (though came to it a lot later than you!) Not one for labels, I surprised myself by actively taking on ‘Straight Edge.’ But as I wrote about in my article from Sobriety to Straight Edge, I’m actively proud to promote sobriety (etc) and all it’s positive points – when so many people are confused by it, or look down on it. xxx

Well said luv! It’s such a personal choice to claim edge.
Thanks for the podcast recommendation!
I just want to say thank you!
I feel like I am in the very early stages of where you have been. Alcohol has been a pervasive issue in my life since I was a child (due to family drinking issues). I never considered myself someone who had a drinking problem personally (and even scoffed at straight edge in the past), but after spending some time cutting back on my intake and reflecting on how booze has affected me I’m feeling more and more drawn to continue down this path, although I think I have a long way to go! I really appreciate your insight as it shows the thought processes I am currently going through are totally normal.
Thanks again!
Hey Angie,
Thank you for your comment and so glad reading the article has helped somewhat 🙂 We often think we are alone and really, with billions of us on this planet – there really are so many others who have or are experiencing the same thing. Not meant to be self promotion, but I wrote a much more in-depth personal account on my blog – one I never actually thought I’d share – but I did! Link below in case you want to check it out.
Take care of you – it’s not easy changing your relationship with alcohol, but oh man, it’s worth it!!

Is it ok to ask what her onlyfans is?
Sounds interesting for sure
Amazing person that does as much as they can to help the music and mental health community.
Love seeing a straight edge grind group! I love grind/death metal, more my thing than hardcore, so I love hearing someone make such nasty riffage as a straight edge individual. I always felt like there should be more room for stuff like this in grind/death, but sadly nobody seems down with it in the metal world.
I know this post is old as hell, but I’m dealing with stuff at the moment as well and wanted to say taking meds still leaves you straight edge, as you aren’t trying to escape reality, you’re trying to come back to it. That’s my two cents worth anyway
Thank you for sharing your perspective! You’re an inspiration!!!
rawr.
Best,
Est
what an amazing bit of show history here. Top 3 shows i attended all time.
Thank you for sharing this so openly. Conversations like this are exactly what help break stigma and reduce harmful gatekeeping within any community. Health should never be overshadowed by rigid identity rules, especially when someone is navigating serious conditions like epilepsy, Crohn’s, PTSD, and panic disorder.
I appreciate how you emphasized discipline and intentional use. That distinction between using something medicinally versus abusing it is important — not just in straight-edge culture, but in any lifestyle built around values. Survival, stability, and long-term wellbeing absolutely come first.
The balance you describe — acknowledging both the benefits and risks of medicinal cannabis — makes this perspective grounded and honest rather than defensive. Posts like this push the conversation forward in a much healthier way.
Amazing person that does as much as they can to help the music and mental health community.
